A Sunny and Romantic Kitchen
The existing residence is a 20's era home with classical details and the patina of time that is elusive in modern construction. The clients were looking for a large clear volume of space for daily family functions where the mother of three girls could watch her children from the kitchen whether they were in the back yard or in the family room. The existing configuration of distinct rooms for the kitchen, breakfast room, mudroom, and den were all fused in the remodel, resulting in an "L" shaped open space. When the walls and ceilings were opened, poor framing conditions from a previous second story addition were revealed. Clever engineering allowed the loads to be carried with no beams intruding on the ceiling of the new space and only one column was necessary, which was captured in the new island. To expand the space, there was a small addition and an existing stoop was partly enclosed.
The client was a primary partner in designing the functional areas of the new space. The kitchen has several detailed work zones: cooking and baking, food prep, pantry, clean up and storage, and a spot to plug in a laptop for homework at the oversized island. Tile countertops, painted wood cabinets, period hardware and fixtures all amplify the period charm of the home.
Great attention was given to detailing and finishing throughout the remodeled area. The new kitchen was intended to provide all the amenities of contemporary life and reflect the period romance of the home. The client's artistic sense of color combined with the brilliant light of many new windows makes a joyous family area in a romantic house.
