Creating an open feeling by reorganizing rooms
Our given envelope for this kitchen remodel is large in square footage, but the space was choppy and not well planned. The California Ranch was also quite outdated in terms of the existing fixtures and finishes. The challenge of the project was clearly to open up the spaces and create a home that is more geared towards modern living. The plan of the home changes drastically with the kitchen and family room merging together into a single large great room. Our client is a prolific cook, with lots of equipment, supplies, and pieces for entertaining. The space is carefully planned to incorporate all of her needs into a logical setup that is conducive to ease of use. Some of our solutions are two appliance garages in the corners, open wine racks for easy access to cooking oils and cooking wines, a full wall of cabinetry for the ovens and ample pantry storage, and three large drawers for spices adjacent to the professional cooktop. The atypical island is used for cooking and entertaining, with a space for stools and additional storage on the back side.
The finishes are selected with care to present a timeless elegance. Clear Alder doors contrasting with deep forest green granite countertops and a soft glass tile backsplash create a warm and contemporary space. Additionally, a closet that originally stood in-between the kitchen and the dining room is developed into a full butler's pantry for additional storage of formal dinnerware, sterling silver serving pieces, an abundance of wine and liquors, and crystal stemware. The result is a space that functions with the ease of modernity and the beauty of a classic working kitchen suitable for entertaining and holiday gatherings.
