Opening up the plan
Our challenge was to modernize this typical ranch home. What was once a separate small and dark kitchen is now a great room which is part of an open plan, as it now incorporates the rest of the living spaces on the main floor of the home. Although the actual floorplan of the kitchen did not change significantly, the removal of the wall dividing the kitchen from the hall, and the addition of a skylight to the space, make the kitchen feels larger and brighter. Well planned storage consisting of two tall pantries, unique inserts for cutlery and spices, large drawers for pots and pans, and space under the island make this kitchen functional. Other cabinetry features include roll out shelves, a built-in cutting board, and a pull out cabinet for trash bins.A tumbled marble backsplash, custom tile mural, warm countertops and cabinetry, and wrought iron light fixtures give a European feel to the new space. The island is a great spot to have breakfast or lunch, while dinner is served at the nearby table. A family friendly space is created with the sitting room beyond the dining area, and magnetic paint on the large wall to display the children's art projects.
At the lower level of this home, situated on a sloped site, we recaptured an existing storage area and recreation room to create a new guest suite, office, game room, and play room. The game room has sweeping views of the backyard and new deck for grilling and entertaining.
