Choose a Rustic Interior Design Theme for Fall

Posted by Devon Shryock

There's a reason why we've been seeing a lot of rustic homes lately. It's an interior design trend that is simultaneously representative of current aesthetics and nostalgia for simpler times. While there is nothing trendier right now than exposed wooden beams and mason jars, a rustic interior design is timeless. This fall, embrace the warmth and comfort with a rustic remodel.

Wood

The first element you should consider when going rustic is natural wood. It's extremely versatile so you don't have to commit to expensive hardwood floors if your home isn't ready for them.

  • Reclaimed wood is always a great touch, and often the most authentic feel to a rustic room. You can substitute new wood for reclaimed timber anywhere. Not only is it a more environmentally-conscious choice, it also provides a wholly unique look to your home's interior.
  • If you're looking to make a grand statement in your home, we suggest exposed wood beams. They're strong enough to function as support while still aesthetically pleasing.
  • It's possible to add a touch rustic vibes to your home without installing an entire wall of wood paneling (although that does look great- especially if it's reclaimed wood). Smaller wood accents around the home can still get the job done. This could include wood freestanding shelves in the kitchen, bar stools made from reclaimed wood, or custom-made wooden cabinets and bookshelves. These little touches could be just the dash of rustic flair your family room or kitchen needs.

Sturdy Fabrics

A rustic home is not the place for flowy silks. When choosing a fabric for your upholstery, curtains, or any other details, look for stronger fabrics that can keep you warm and comfortable during the fall and winter. Burlap, cotton and wool all do the trick. If you're looking for something a little bit lighter, linen may be what you need. A traditional patchwork quilt is the perfect choice for a comforter in the bedroom.

Pop of Color

Choosing a rustic theme doesn't mean you have to give up color in your design. There are many ways to integrate color and vibrancy into your home, both through natural elements and paint.

  • Brick red is not only vibrant but often can be the perfect focal point in a living or dining room. Consider installing one brick wall as a fun alternative to the more common single painted wall design.
  • Stone accents, when used sparingly, can also provide a fun cream or grey tone to balance out a wood-heavy room.
  • Rustic doesn't have to mean burly and masculine. Take a rustic-chic approach with a lighter cottage-inspired theme in a breakfast nook or kitchen. Soft pastels and slightly distressed cloths really pop against a hardwood floor.
  • In general, warm hues contribute to the cozy nature of a rustic design. Autumnal hues like orange and red are the perfect choices for this. A strong green can also complement neutral, natural furnishings extremely well.

Make Things New Again

Log into Pinterest and you'll probably be hit with 25 DIY projects to turn old cabinets and dressers into something new. This is a key component to any rustic interior design. Reusing old items for new purposes becomes an endless stream of possibilities, and that's before you even get to the mason jars! Reclaimed wood is, of course, a great option. One trend we've been seeing more lately is using old barn doors as interior walls or doors. An easy replacement is switching out bathroom sinks with clean rustic buckets or washbasins instead.

Rustic interior design makes for the perfect fall remodel theme. It's inviting and timeless so your home won't feel dated in a year. It also doesn't have to pigeonhole you into a single aesthetic. If you're not willing to go full-rustic, you can combine any of the above features with modern elements to create the perfect home environment for you and your family.
